Success Is A Decision

By Raghda Mahmoud

I used to always ask myself whether it is possible to change the course of one's life in order to achieve success.  Should the events in our lives be treated as facts that should be accepted? Or can we alter how these events play out? In the past few years, I went through an experience that radically changed my life, and gave me the fulfilling answer to my question. Whenever I have the chance, I love to share my experience with anyone who might be embarking on a similar endeavor.

Since my early years of childhood, I found my joy in drawing;  I have always loved to draw portraits and cartoons. I can remember my first “project” of an animated cartoon character, using an ordinary sketch book, when I was only nine.  My family and friends really seemed to admire my drawings, which made me realize my passion for art even at an early age.

When it was the time to decide about my study in college, I joined the Faculty of Al-Alsun (Languages). I had always found languages interesting; people around me encouraged me to choose it, as it was one of the top faculties. After graduation, I began my career as an English teacher.  Although I was remarkably successful at teaching, something was missing.  I always had the feeling that it was not what I should do or should be. After three years of teaching, and lots of soul searching, I finally took the most important decision in my life. I decided to leave teaching and follow my life-long passion.

Once I took that decision, all my fears became an overwhelming sense of excitement.  I began taking courses in graphics and illustration, while at the same time looking for opportunities to launch my career. I was ecstatic when I got my first job in art because I was finally doing something I truly love.  I was keen on taking further steps to develop my skills and grow my talent.  Since then, I’ve been working as an Illustrator and Graphic Artist.  In addition, I have been learning new programs and techniques, taking new courses, and even doing online tutorials.

Nothing could be compared to the outstanding success, enthusiastic energy, and inevitable satisfaction we experience in doing what we were meant to do. Within each one of us exists a super, precious, and God-given talent that makes us special and unique among other people.  We should find it, have patience, and take a chance. We should all try to remember what we used to love as children.  Most of the time, it is the way to our true passion.  Once we find that thing that we are most passionate about, we need to follow it.  Even if it takes time and hard work.  We have to be willing to do whatever it'd take to best utilize it; ignore any frustrating or negative comments encountered along the way. We must stay positive, believe in ourselves, and trust our ability to achieve what we want. And most importantly, never stop improving and updating our talents and skills.  It is definitely worth it.

It’s never too late to reshape our lives the way we always dreamt of.  Success is a journey that begins with a single decision.  It’s never too late to make the decision.
